Riot Control 17

Wow, I haven't posted since February...apologies, but it was a bit of a rough 1st half of the year. While I've been neglecting my dutiful search for the next hottest beat etc...I actually have been listening to a shit-ton of music that I've fallen in love with this summer, but am pretty sure you've already fallen in love too...I see you LCD, Sleigh Bells, Big Boi, Mount Kimbie...etc...So today am gonna concentrate on building up my good friends Burt Fox and Sonny Noir's latest Riot Control podcast. If you're not a subscriber to Riot Contol NYC you *should* go here to do so:

http://www.riotcontrolnyc.com/subscribe.html

I know you might think I am biased about their mixes seeing as they're my brothas from anotha mutha...however it's truly because Burt Fox and I listen to music similarly...i.e. subtleties and nuances. So when they put out this last mix, I kinda flipped my shit as it encompasses my passion for music on soo many different levels.

Any mix that has Trick Daddy, Girl Unit, Chief Boima and of course a remix done by our friend Burt Fox is A-OK in my book.

So end your summer right and get this mix now! Much love!

Paradise Circus

Well hello there and happy new year. Sorry this is my first time posting this year, but my full time job of looking for a full time job has taken precedence. In any case, I needed to stop my fervent efforts in order to share with you the beauty that is the new Massive Attack album. As a fan that has been with them since the days of Blue Lines, I am more than elated with their new release "Heligoland" (just released today). It's filled with the usual innovative sounds and haunting vocals, but I feel they've graduated to perhaps a more mature level. Tunde Adebimpe, lead singer of TV on the Radio, graces us with his voice on the first track "Pray for Rain". The beginning drags on but as it turns to just about the 3rd minute the song picks up. Later in the album we hear another familiar voice, Ms. Hope Sandoval on the eerie yet sexy track "Paradise Circus". I used to think Hope's voice was a touch winy, but the Mazzy Star songstress sounds like she has mastered her craft. I really love everything about this track...from it's cadence to it's composition. It definitely belongs on one of my infamous "Let's Make Whoopee" soundtracks. So here you are. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

Gucci Mane

I can't believe I haven't written since September and it's now almost the end of the year! Time flies when you're doing, ah, well, nothing. Well as many of you know my boy Gucci Mane has been one of the most popular people to remix this year. Diplo, king of all things remix, is about to drop a Gucci remixtape. He released this track on Fader the other day and I've been obsessed! Why you ask? Cuz he brilliantly samples Mimi's "Can't Let Go". That song has a special place in my heart as it reminds me of getting in trouble for making out at my senior year xmas formal. If you're lucky enough to be invited to my bday party, I might make an entrance to this song a-la my Super Sweet 16 stylee...tiara and all...ah yeah! Happy Holidays friends...and as my friend says love your loves! Enjoy! xoxo

Rustie

Straight out of Glasgow comes super producer Rustie. Now you know as well as I do that talented producer does not always make for talented DJ. Not true in our friend Rustie's case. This mix he just put out for FACT Mag is chalk filled with dirty south beats, synthy electro beats, dubstep, etc...etc...etc...Always staying on top of what's hot, he bangs out this mix like the way Federer makes tennis look easy. (Obviously the Open is on my brain ;)) Hurry up and get this now...it's only available for 3 weeks! Enjoy the holiday kids!

Where's the After Party?

You're probably wondering why a lady of leisure wouldn't be writing as much with all her free time. Well to be quite honest I've not really had very much free time. I've been travelling a lot. Just west coast, but travelling nonetheless. Lucky for you today I felt like writing and have quite the mix for you. I've been working out, cleaning my house and/or dancing around aimlessly to this since it fell into my hands. It happens to be a mix by Brooklyn Bass sweetheart Jubilee. This mix features tracks such as Miami Bass king, Otto Von Schirach's "Bass Low" and throw backs like Jammin's "Kinda Funky". I've been fortunate enough to meet and befriend this girl...thank you Burt Fox...and if anyone plays tracks with the style I enjoy most, it's this lady. She's been touring quite a bit these days but will be back in town for her monthly party Flashing Lights. It all goes down @ Studio B July 10th. Be prepared to feel the bass!

Looking for the Perfect Beat

So I realized it's been a year since I started this blog...wow! I need to post more these days, but there just hasn't been anything I have been over the moon about. Yeah as boring and lame as that comment is, is just about what I've been finding lately. Burt Fox and I had an in depth discussion about this last night over a cocktail and j...just to make sure I hadn't overlooked anything, but sadly his sentiments were the same. Since I wanted to post something seeing as it's an anniversary and all, I thought what throw back would be apropos for this posting...and then it came to me...Afrika Bambaataa of course!

I think everyone who is anyone knows who Bambaataa is...at the very least you've heard Planet Rock either on it's own or cut up and sampled on many many hip hop joints. A little background...Bambaatta was born in the South Bronx...and hailed as the leader of a gang called the Black Spades...through a life changing visit to Africa, he decided to use his leadership to change gang bangers and formed Zulu Nation. He encouraged these kids to stop the violence and turn it into an expression of art such as emceeing, dancing, making beats...etc. Many of these kids who followed Bambaataa soon became part of the Zulu Nation family and would tour with him all over the world promoting peace and unity within gang communities. The pop culture phrase "hip hop saved my life" was said to come from the Zulu Nation movement.

Aside from his movement of peace, he is also known as one of the godfathers of turntablism, next to Grandmaster Flash and Kool Herc. Many Djs such as ZTrip, Cut Chemist, QBert, Koala...all say Bambaataa had a huge influence on their skills. He is praised all over the world and still has yearly Zulu Nation parties. Very often in NYC, you'll see his name on the bill for parties.

So in celebration of the man who influenced so many of my favorite Dj's lives, I give you Looking for the Perfect Beat. Enjoy!
